What is printed circuit board assembly?

PCB assembly involves the soldering of electronic components onto unpopulated PCBs. There are basically two different processes, SMD and THT PCB assembly. At Schaffner GmbH, we specialize in both manufacturing processes and will be happy to advise you on the advantages and disadvantages of the individual options. On request, we can make an individual recommendation for your project.

Printed circuit board assembly: SMD production

SMD production (surface-mounted device) is a term for the assembly of a printed circuit board with surface-mounted components. These are soldered directly onto the PCB using solderable contact surfaces. We assemble SMD components using our six automatic placement machines in previously applied solder paste before the assembly is soldered as a whole. This makes PCB assembly quick and flexible. SMD assembly has now largely replaced THT production, as it offers numerous advantages. Direct soldering on the board eliminates the need for soldering on the back. As PCB assembly is much denser and takes place on both sides, the production of devices is more efficient and significantly more cost-effective. In addition, the weight of this PCB assembly is lower as smaller components can be used. The high-frequency properties are improved by the small distances between the components and the shortening of the conductor paths in SMD production. Thanks to our modern placement machines, PCB assembly using SMD is faster than using THT, which reduces overall production costs.

PCB assembly: THT production

THT PCB assembly stands for 'Through-Hole Technology' and is an assembly method for electronic components with wires. In contrast to SMD production, THT assembly is a through-hole assembly. The components have wire connections and are inserted through the contact holes of the PCB during production and then connected to the conductor track using hand soldering, wave soldering or selective soldering. Simple and inexpensive electronic devices are still manufactured partially or completely using THT production, but in most cases using SMD assembly. Possible areas of application also include power electronics and handmade devices - for example by hobby electronics enthusiasts or craftsmen.
