THT Assembly
THT assembly at Schaffner GmbH
Once the assemblies have completed SMD production, including optical SMD inspection in the laboratory, they are further processed in our in-house THT department. We can use a wave soldering system or a selective system for the soldering process. On the wave soldering system, the flux is first sprayed over the entire surface of the circuit board. An infrared preheater ensures stress-free and homogeneous heating before soldering, after which the circuit boards pass over the solder wave. The solder wave offers a higher throughput and is therefore the more cost-effective option.
In selective soldering, the flux is applied with pinpoint accuracy, and after full-surface preheating, the pre-programmed soldering points are individually traversed, similar to manual soldering.
What is THT assembly?
THT assembly means 'Through-Hole Technology' and stands for a type of assembly with electronic components that are equipped with wires. In contrast to SMD production (surface-mounted device), THT assembly is a push-fit assembly. The individual components are equipped with wire connections and are inserted through the contact holes of the PCB to be assembled. Various types of soldering, such as hand soldering, wave soldering or selective soldering, are suitable for connecting the components to the conductor track. Other possible areas of application include power electronics and handmade devices, such as those produced by craftsmen or hobby electronics engineers. For THT assembly, we have been relying on the support of H2D Electronic AG, the specialist for device construction and cable assembly, for many years.
SMD or THT assembly? The advantages and disadvantages of both methods
Are you planning a project and perhaps wondering whether SMD production or THT assembly is more suitable? Opinions in the industry are divided, but in fact SMD assembly has already replaced THT assembly in many cases, as it does offer some advantages over push-fit assembly. With SMD production, the components do not have to be soldered on the opposite side of the PCB. This means that the board can be assembled much more densely and the opposite side serves as an additional surface for components. The production of the devices is therefore more efficient and significantly less cost-intensive. The devices are also lighter, as there are no connecting wires and smaller components can be used. The distances between the components are smaller and the conductor paths are shortened, which improves the high-frequency properties.
